Radio host: Mets 'worried' about Jacob deGrom after return from latest injury

New York Mets ace Jacob deGrom missed the second half of the 2021 MLB season due to lingering elbow issues and was then sidelined throughout the opening half of the ongoing campaign because of a stress reaction in his right scapula.

The two-time National League Cy Young Award winner returned to big-league action earlier this month and has thus far logged four starts, including a solid performance at the Atlanta Braves that resulted in a loss last Thursday. Originally, deGrom was on track to start Tuesday's Subway Series contest at the New York Yankees, but the Mets instead are having Taijuan Walker take the bump for that encounter so they can save deGrom for some point of the upcoming series versus the Colorado Rockies that gets underway on Thursday.

On Tuesday morning, radio host Gregg Giannotti of New York's WFAN hit out at the Mets for the decision and even suggested some within the organization are concerned about the 34-year-old's ability to remain healthy after just a handful of appearances.

"I don’t need to see Jacob deGrom pitch against the Rockies," Giannotti explained, per Ryan Chichester of Audacy. "Why is he getting extra days off at this point?

"I think they decided because they’re worried about deGrom."

Fellow Mets ace Max Scherzer was unable to guide the Amazins to a victory at Yankee Stadium on Monday evening, as the visitors fell to the Bronx Bombers 4-2.

"That was the whole thing. 'We don’t have deGrom or Scherzer against the Phillies over the weekend, but we have them lined up for that two-game series against the Yankees, and it doesn’t get better than that,'" Giannotti continued during his comments. "The fact that they beat Scherzer, you’re like 'they’re not gonna beat Scherzer and deGrom, so they’re not gonna win back to back,' and now I don’t feel that way."

Former NFL quarterback and current radio personality Boomer Esiason, co-host of the WFAN morning show along with Giannotti, added that the Mets are "trying to be smart" with deGrom to have him at his best "in September and October."

As of Tuesday afternoon, the Mets hadn't yet confirmed when deGrom will pitch again. Thus far, he's 2-1 with a 2.31 ERA this season.
