Rangers Injury Updates, deGrom Return
USA TODAY Sports

Several Texas Rangers players who entered the offseason with injuries are doing well and their recoveries are on track.

And Jacob deGrom is progressing well from June UCL surgery, according to Rangers general manager Chis Young.

Young also updated the status of Adolis Garcia and Max Scherzer, both of whom were sidelined with injuries during the World Series but are doing well.

"We knew with both of those [injuries] it was going to be, roughly, four-plus weeks of rest before they would be able to start any type of really active program, and even then there was going to be a build-up," Young said. "They were significant injuries. We're at the end of that period where we can check in on them, monitor them, and see what the next steps are."

Catcher Jonah Heim, who suffered a left wrist injury on July 27, did not need offseason surgery, Young said. Heim was examined in Arizona, and doctors found that it had healed.

Scherzer and Garcia were injured in Game 3 of the World Series against the Arizona Diamondbacks and replaced on the roster for the final two games. Scherzer injured his back, and Garcia strained a muscle in his oblique.

"We’re monitoring both players to make sure they make full recoveries," Young said. "We’ll make sure they’re fully healthy before they return to any action."

As for deGrom, who made six starts for the Rangers before the injury, Young remains "cautiously optimistic" that he'll be available at some point in the second half of the 2024 season.

"But I don't want to commit to that timetable because I know how surgeries go, and there's a long way to go between now and then," he said, "but thus far, everything has gone well. Jacob is feeling great. He's passed all of his tests thus far. He'll continue to have check-ins throughout the offseason."
