Red Sox Acquire Young Flamethrower From Rival To Bolster Bullpen Depth
Dave Nelson-USA TODAY Sports

The Boston Red Sox are playing for next season after a disappointing fall out of playoff contention.

In doing so, they'll continue to add players they believe could turn into role players for the organization. The Red Sox identified on potential fit on Labor Day, prior to taking on the Tampa Bay Rays for a three-game set at Tropicana Field.

"Red Sox have claimed right-handed pitcher Logan Gillaspie from the Baltimore Orioles and assigned him to Worcester. To make room on 40-man, outfielder Jarren Duran (was) transferred to the 60-day injured list," MassLive's Sean McAdam tweeted Monday.

Gillaspie has entry-level experience in Major League Baseball, making his debut last season. The 26-year-old has a 4.10 ERA with an 18-to-8 strikeout-to-walk ratio, .315 batting average against and 1.59 WHIP in 26 1/3 innings across 28 appearances.

The right-hander has spent most of his season with Triple-A Norfolk, where he's been a middling reliever. Gillaspie has a 4.71 ERA with a 34-to-16 strikeout-to-walk ratio, .266 batting average against and 1.49 WHIP in 36 1/3 innings this season.

Gillaspie has a big arm -- averaging 95.6 mph on his fastball this season, but does not appear to have what it takes to help Boston compete. The young gun allows a lot of contact and has an inflated walk rate. Thus far, his velocity has not helped him much as he's not proven to be a big-league-caliber player.

The Red Sox developmental department would have to reshape his repertoire to get the most out of him.

As for Duran, his season-ending foot surgery has been well documented so the injury list designation was nothing more than a formality to clear up a roster spot.
