Red Sox Reportedly Call Up Newly-Acquired Intriguing Hurler To Replace Struggling Lefty
Gary A. Vasquez-USA TODAY Sports

The Boston Red Sox shook up their bullpen a little bit Sunday morning.

Boston reportedly called up newly-acquired relief pitcher Nick Robertson to the big leagues and optioned lefty Joe Jacques down to the Triple-A Worcester Red Sox to make room on the roster, according to The Athletic's Jen McCaffrey.

"Red Sox announce they recalled RHP Nick Robertson from Triple-A Worcester, one of the pitchers they acquired in the Kiké Hernandez trade," McCaffrey said. "They optioned Joe Jacques to Worcester to make room."

Robertson was acquired by Boston in the club's deal with the Los Angeles Dodgers centered around utility man Kiké Hernandez. The 25-year-old currently is ranked as Boston's 30th-best prospect and will look to carry over minor league success to the big league level. Robertson made his big league debut this season and struggled in nine outings while allowing seven earned runs but impressed at the Triple-A level. In 27 appearances with the Triple-A Oklahoma City Dodgers, Roberston compiled a 2.54 ERA and an eye-popping 42-to-9 strikeout-to-walk ratio.

The righty was drafted in the seventh round of the 2019 Major League Baseball June Amateur Draft out of James Madison University and made his professional debut in the Dodgers' organization the same year. He worked his way up the Los Angeles farm system and eventually latched on with the big league club earlier this season before being traded to Boston.

The 25-year-old is set to replace Jacques on the big league roster after some recent struggles. So far this season Jacques has compiled a 5.85 ERA across 17 appearances with Boston.
