Red Sox's Craig Breslow Engaged In 'Number Of Conversations' In Free Agency, Trade Market

Will new Boston Red Sox chief baseball officer Craig Breslow make a splash in his first offseason at the helm of baseball operations?

Breslow has entered the role with more conviction than his predecessor and appears more willing to make an aggressive decision. 

The former reliever revealed that he has some deals in the works while speaking at the WooSox Foundation Honors Gala on Saturday.

“There are numbers of conversations that we’re engaged in both with free agents and teams," Breslow told the media.

While his latest comments should not come as a massive surprise, it's encouraging to hear that activity could be on the horizon. 

It's obvious at this point in the offseason that all 30 Major League Baseball teams are engaged in some level of free-agent negotiations. The latter part of the comment was intriguing, though.

Breslow revealed that the Red Sox are actively working on trades, which is what he meant by being engaged with other teams. 

The Red Sox are in need of starting pitching, a right-handed bat -- preferably an outfielder -- and a second baseman. There are also plenty of ancillary needs such as bullpen depth but that is not the priority at the peak of the hot stove. 

The new Red Sox regime appears to have fewer leaks than we've been accustomed to seeing in the past, so the "interest kings" could be departing. Instead, we might see some surprise signings/trades that seemingly come out of nowhere. 

If that becomes the case, it'll likely be during the Winter Meetings or shortly thereafter.
