Skip Schumaker's time with Marlins might be coming to an end

With the Miami Marlins finally ending their nine-game losing streak to begin the season on Sunday, reigning National League Manager of the Year Skip Schumaker could be nearing the end of his time leading the club next season or possibly sooner.

Reports have come out the Marlins have chosen to void the 2025 club option of Schumaker's contract. It, however, would come as a shock that the Marlins would let the manager who led them to their second playoff appearance since 2003 become a free agent at the end of the year.

Tasked with the difficult job of beginning the 2024 season with pitchers Sandy Alcantara, Eury Perez, Braxton Garrett and Edward Cabrera all on the injured list, Schumaker and the Marlins are currently sitting at 1-9 in the loaded NL East.

They have plenty of time to claw their way back into the playoff chase. Still, with the news of his option being voided, it remains to be seen if he will even survive the 2024 season with the club let alone get the chance to manage his way into the offseason.

Only 44 years old, it's fair to say that he was put into a situation that even the most sought-after managers wouldn't have been able to succeed with four starting pitchers missing and an offense filled with below-average talent at multiple positions.

Schumaker will be a hot commodity amongst teams looking for a new manager if he doesn't stick with the Marlins.

If the Marlins remain at the bottom of the NL East in 2024, he could be joined by some of his players getting a change of scenery with a firesale being a major possibility including second baseman Luis Arraez, first baseman Josh Bell and starting pitcher Jesus Luzardo.
