Yankees Outright Ex-Red Sox Slugger After Disappointing Season Among Roster Shake-Up

The New York Yankees made a handful of moves Thursday night.

New York -- like the rest of Major League Baseball -- is preparing for what is expected to be an extremely active offseason. There's plenty of star talent available and even more names will pop up throughout the winter as the trade market comes into focus. All in all, it will be a busy offseason. Clubs are starting to get ready and have begun outrighting players to make room on the 40-man roster. 

The Yankees placed six players on outright waivers Thursday as a sign of mild roster turnover. One of the players placed on the outright waivers reportedly was former Boston Red Sox slugger Franchy Cordero, according to the New York Post's Joel Sherman. 

"Hearing the Yankees have outrighted Domingo German," Sherman said. "Also Matt Bowman, Franchy Cordero, Jimmy Cordero, Billy McKinney and Ryan Weber. All can be claimed now or elect free agency."

New York signed Cordero ahead of the 2023 campaign after he spent the last offseason with the Baltimore Orioles. Cordero impressed throughout spring training but was released by the Orioles and signed by the Yankees. 

Cordero certainly was impressive for the Yankees to kick off the 2023 campaign and clubbed four home runs and drove in 11 runs in just his first seven games with the club but he drastically cooled down. Overall, Cordero appeared in 24 games with the Yankees in 2023 and hit six home runs, drove in 13 runs, and slashed .188/.211/.478.

The 29-year-old could be claimed on waivers but likely will go unclaimed and can then elect free agency. He will be looking for a new opportunity this offseason and likely will land a minor league deal with a club as he looks to work his way back up to the big leagues.
