Best All-Time NBA Centers – Ranking the Greatest in History
Michael Sears / USA TODAY NETWORK

The NBA has always been a big man’s league. So many players have earned the right to be one of the best all-time NBA centers. Since the very beginning, dominant centers like Wilt Chamberlain and Bill Russell were seen as the greatest ever. The transformation of centers to what they are today is also incredible. Centers used to be in the paint the entire game, on defense and offense. Examples of centers like this were Shaquille O’Neal and Dwight Howard. Nowadays, centers spread the floor on offense and are racking up triple-doubles left and right. Nikola Jokic is the prime example of the evolution of centers. He should be the main inspiration for young players to replicate, as his playstyle is the future for centers.

Listing the best all-time NBA centers is a complicated endeavor. The transformation of centers and how they dominate the NBA differently today compared to the past makes it difficult to compare and rank. Thus, this is my opinion on the matter, and is completely up for debate, just like every discussion topic in sports. Leave a comment on who you think belongs on the list.

Honorable Mention: Wilt Chamberlain

Wilt Chamberlain is undoubtedly one of the most celebrated NBA players in history. There are still stat lines that are unbelievable and unbroken because of how dominant Wilt was. He played during a time when the NBA was just beginning, so it is hard to compare him when he played in a league that couldn’t even stand close to how tall Wilt was. Standing at 7’ 1”, Wilt towered over the entire NBA at the time, and his numbers showcase that.

He had seasons where he averaged over 50 points per game, averaging over 46 minutes per game, and 27 rebounds on average. He is also one of the league’s NBA triple-double leaders, mostly due to his blocking ability. Even though he was so dominant individually, Bill Russell stood in his way of earning a lot of rings. He earned himself only two championship rings. You’d expect more from a player of his caliber at the time, but Bill Russell stood in his path.

Although Chamberlain’s rings may pale in comparison to those of players like Bill Russell or Michael Jordan, we cannot overlook his accolades. He was a four-time MVP, a seven-time All-NBA First Team selection, and a scoring champion on multiple occasions. Chamberlain’s athleticism and incredible scoring ability made him a true game-changer.

What sets Chamberlain apart is not just the number of rings he possessed, but his overall dominance as a player. He still holds numerous records, including the most points scored in a single game with an astounding 100 points. His 72-point game in the same season was nothing short of extraordinary. His numerous 70+ point games are often overlooked because they constituted a regular stat line.

While Chamberlain’s championships may not define his legacy, we cannot understate his impact and influence on the game. His records and statistics speak for themselves, making him a true legend in the world of basketball. He may not be the NBA player with the most rings, but he was still one of the best all-time NBA centers.

5. Nikola Jokic

Nikola Jokic, the Serbian basketball sensation, has already established himself as one of the best all-time NBA centers. Known for his insane passing skills and basketball IQ, Jokic has become one of the league’s top playmakers. He is currently averaging seven assists in his career and nine this season. He currently ranks 4th among the all-time NBA triple-double leaders, an exemplification of his versatility and ability to impact the game in several ways.

What sets Jokic apart from other players is his unique style of play. His ability to handle the ball and make precise passes is uncharacteristic for someone of his size, making him a nightmare matchup for opposing teams.  he used to be one of the heaviest NBA players before losing weight. Also, his perfect touch when he shoots makes it seem like every shot he attempts is going in, and he makes it look so effortless.

Last season, Jokic earned his first NBA championship and is on the trajectory to win another this season. His career is still so young, and he has plenty of time to make an even bigger mark on the league’s history. In the meantime, Jokic has earned himself multiple league MVPs and is most likely earning his third this season. He has achieved stat lines that no one has achieved before, all while appearing disinterested in basketball.

4. Bill Russell

When it comes to discussing the greatest NBA players of all time, names like Michael Jordan, LeBron James, and Kareem Abdul-Jabbar often dominate the conversation. However, one player’s name should not be omitted from the discussion. That player is Bill Russell, an NBA legend who deserves an honorable mention for his incredible career and record-breaking achievements.

For good reason, people regard Bill Russell as one of the most dominant players in NBA history. He played for the Boston Celtics from 1956 to 1969, during which he led the team to an astonishing 11 NBA championships. Yes, 11 championships. He is the NBA player with the most rings, an accomplishment that may never be surpassed. The Celtics team he was on was far better than any other team in the NBA at the time, mostly due to the fact there were not nearly as many teams as there are today.

What sets Russell apart from other NBA greats is not only his championship record but also his impact on the game. Known for his impeccable defense and shot-blocking ability, Russell revolutionized the center’s role in basketball. He was a game-changer, completely dominating the paint and influencing the game on both ends of the court. His leadership skills were also unrivaled, as he served as the player-coach for the Celtics during the later years of his career, further solidifying his legendary status.

Despite his numerous accolades and incredible achievements, Bill Russell often doesn’t receive the recognition he deserves in discussions about the greatest NBA players. Perhaps this is because his playing career took place during a different era, with different statistics and fewer televised games. Nevertheless, we cannot ignore his impact on the game. Bill Russell is a true legend of the sport, and his record-breaking championship count alone warrants an honorable mention in any conversation about the all-time NBA centers of all time.

3. Hakeem “The Dream” Olajuwon

Hakeem Olajuwon has achieved legendary status in the world of basketball. He was born in Nigeria and entered the NBA at the same time as Michael Jordan. Known for his footwork, quickness, and iconic post-up game, Olajuwon was virtually unstoppable on the court. He revolutionized how centers approached attacking the paint, with moves such as the “Dream Shake” named after Olajuwon.

With numerous accolades to his name, including two NBA championships Olajuwon’s impact on the game is undeniable. Granted. these two championships came during Jordan’s time retired, before coming back. His combination of scoring, rebounding, and shot-blocking made him a force to be reckoned with. His two back-to-back NBA championships in 1994 and 1995 came out of nowhere. He was the sixth and fourth seed respectively and still beat the odds. Going from the seeding the Rockets had to win the championship twice is a testament to how great Olajuwon was. He had also won MVP in 1994, as a sixth seed. Even though his team wasn’t great, he was, along with being a fantastic leader.

In summary, Hakeem “The Dream” Olajuwon’s remarkable career has cemented his legacy as one of the NBA’s greatest players. Sports media today underappreciate him, even though his game had no flaws. Incredible defense, unstoppable offense, and an inspirational leader. He led Rockets teams that had no business beating out teams such as the Utah Jazz with Karl Malone and the Phoenix Suns with Charles Barkley. Hakeem is easily one of the best all-time NBA centers.

2. Shaquille O’Neal

When it comes to dominance in the world of basketball, one name always mentioned is Shaquille O’Neal. He stood at a formidable 7’1″ and weighed over 300 pounds. He was one of the heaviest NBA players, yet still was incredibly agile. “Shaq” was not only a force to be reckoned with on the court but also a larger-than-life figure both on and off it.

Shaq’s raw power, agility, and athleticism made him nearly unstoppable in the paint. Opponents would often find themselves overmatched against his imposing presence. He effortlessly dominated the game with his incredible dunks over players and powerful post moves. His ability to change the course of a game with a single play was unparalleled. For more on how dominant Shaq truly was, check out the article on the Lakers’ all-time starting five.

Off the court, Shaq’s larger-than-life personality endeared him to fans and media alike. He was never one to shy away from the spotlight. His charismatic nature made him a beloved figure in popular culture. Whether it was his acting roles in movies or his humor-filled appearances in commercials and talk shows, Shaquille O’Neal has left an indelible mark on and off the court.

Shaquille O’Neal will forever be known as one of the best all-time NBA centers. His four NBA championships and impressive career statistics solidify his place in basketball history. But beyond the accolades and rings, what truly sets Shaq apart is his impact on the game and the lasting impression he has left in the hearts of fans worldwide.

1. Kareem Abdul-Jabbar

Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, a name that echoes through the halls of basketball history, dominated the NBA like few others. His impact on the game and his team’s success cannot be overstated, spanning two decades in his career. Standing at an impressive 7 feet 2 inches, Abdul-Jabbar possessed an arsenal of skills that made him virtually unstoppable on the court.

What sets Abdul-Jabbar apart from his peers is not only his incredible individual accomplishments but also his team’s success. With a staggering six NBA championships to his name, he stands as one of the NBA players with the most rings. Not to mention his six league MVPs, which is the most ever by a single player in history.

Kareem’s signature skyhook shot was virtually impossible to block. He became the highest-scoring player in basketball history because of this shot before LeBron James took that title. Additionally, his consistent presence in the playoffs and ability to elevate his game in crucial moments helped lead his teams to victory.

Beyond his on-court accolades, Abdul-Jabbar’s impact extends far beyond basketball. His advocacy for civil rights, social justice, and educational initiatives showcases his commitment to using his platform for the betterment of society. He forever etched his legacy as a player and humanitarian in the records of basketball history, solidifying his status as one of the best all-time NBA centers.
