Cavs Hire Anderson Varejao as Player Development Consultant
Ken Blaze-USA TODAY Sports

The Cavaliers have hired former center/forward Anderson Varejao as a player development consultant and global ambassador, per Chris Fedor of Cleveland.com.

Varejao, 40, was a longtime fan and organization favorite, known for his hustling play and ability to annoy opponents. To most fans, he was simply known as “Wild Thing,” which was not only based on his intense play, but long curly hair.

In all, he played for the Cavs for 13 seasons, compiling career averages of 7.2 points and 7.2 rebounds in Cleveland. He spent the final two years of his career with the rival Warriors after the Cavs traded him to the Trail Blazers (he was subsequently waived).

He returned to the Cavs to finish his career, playing five games in 2020-21.

Per Fedor, Varejao will help assist in player development, and has already been making appearances at the practice facility in Independence. Along with that, he will assist in the area of “leading the organization’s international partnership effort,” Fedor wrote.

Th Cavs (27-16) are coming off a road win over the Trail Blazers, which marked the season debut of Ricky Rubio. You can check out that story in the latest Dribbles right here.
