Charlotte Hornets Officially Sign Former NBA 1st Round Pick

R.J. Hunter most recently played in the NBA during the 2018-19 season when he appeared in one game for the Boston Celtics.  

On Friday, the Charlotte Hornets announced that they had signed Hunter (and Edmond Sumner).  

Via Hornets PR: "President of Basketball Operations and General Manager Mitch Kupchak announced today the Hornets have signed free agent guards R.J. Hunter and Edmond Sumner. Per team policy, terms of the deals were not disclosed"

Hunter played college basketball for Georgia State (three seasons), and during his final year, he averaged 19.7 points per contest.  

After his successful college career, Hunter was the 28th pick in the 2015 NBA Draft by the Celtics. 

In addition to Boston, the 29-year-old has also spent time with the Houston Rockets and Chicago Bulls.

Over four seasons in the NBA, Hunter has career averages of 3.0 points and 1.0 rebounds per contest while shooting 37.1% from the field and 29.5% from the three-point range in 45 games (he's also appeared in five NBA playoff games). 

Hunter has also spent a significant amount of time in the G League. 

His career averages are 18.0 points, 3.9 rebounds, 3.5 assists and 1.4 steals per contest while shooting 40.8% from the field and 34.5% from the three-point range in 136 regular season games. 

As for the Hornets, they are coming off another tough season as the team dealt with injuries.  

They were the 14th seed in the Eastern Conference with a 27-55 record and missed the NBA playoffs for the seventh straight season.
