Could James Nnaji Make an Unexpected Return to Charlotte This Season?

After the Hornets waived Kai Jones, they have an additional open roster spot and a need for another center. Both Mark Williams and Nick Richards have performed well in pre-season, but if one gets injured, Charlotte's front court depth would look shallow. PJ Washington and JT Thor could play some small ball five, but there might be another option.

James Nnaji was drafted 31st overall in the 2023 draft. Despite not logging major minutes at Summer League, he impressed with his defensive IQ, rebounding and physicality. The original plan was for Nnaji to spend the 2023/24 season with FC Barcelona, where he has a multi-year contract until 2027.

However, this summer Barcelona signed former Hornet Willy Hernangomez and Euroleague veteran Jan Vesley. Nnaji has been out the rotation for Barcelona, mostly playing garbage time at the end of games. As someone who picked up basketball later in life Nnaji needs to be on the court gaining more experience, whether it's in Europe, the G-League or the NBA. 

Sources have confirmed to AllHornets.com it is contractually possible for Charlotte to buyout James Nnaji's contract this season and sign him to a rookie scale deal. However, for this to happen all three parties would need to agree; Barcelona, Nnaji and the Hornets. 

For Charlotte, they need to decide if adding another young player to their core is the right move for their roster. Some argue that bringing in a more experienced player might be better, especially if Nnaji isn't quite ready for the NBA, even in case of an injury.

Barcelona would have to decide if they're okay with letting one of their players leave during the season. They also need to consider what happens if Vesley or Hernangomez get injured – can they find a replacement quickly?

For Nnaji, the decision would likely be easy. If he's not receiving playing time in Barcelona, he'd probably prefer to play regularly in Greensboro and have a shot at earning minutes in the NBA.

Mid-season contract buyouts are rare, but it is possible. If all the key stakeholders are motivated and come to an agreement, there is a path for Nnaji to make an unexpected return to Charlotte this season.
