Ish Smith in line to make NBA history following trade to Nuggets

Ish Smith is on the move again. The veteran is being traded along with Kentavious Caldwell-Pope from the Washington Wizards to the Denver Nuggets in exchange for Monte Morris and Will Barton. As a result, Smith is in line to make NBA history.

If Smith, who turns 34 on July 5, suits up and plays for the Nuggets next season, he will set the record for most teams played with by any one player. 

Smith has suited up for 12 different teams, including two stints with the Wizards. He is currently tied with Joe Smith, Chucky Brown, Jim Jackson and Tony Massenburg as the only players who’ve played for 12 teams.

Last season, Smith initially signed with his hometown Charlotte Hornets after three seasons with the Wizards. However, he was later traded back to the Wizards along with Vernon Carey Jr. in exchange for Montrezl Harrell.

Smith started his NBA career in 2010 with the Houston Rockets after going undrafted out of Wake Forest. He also played for the Memphis Grizzlies, Golden State Warriors, Orlando Magic, Milwaukee Bucks, Phoenix Suns, Oklahoma City Thunder, Philadelphia 76ers and Detroit Pistons.

Smith has played for the Wizards and 76ers twice. His longest stint with one team was three seasons. That occurred with the Pistons from 2016-2019. His best time came with the 76ers during which he averaged 13.6 points and 6.7 assists.

For his career, Smith has played in 719 games, including 167 starts. He has career averages of 7.6 points, 3.9 assists and 2.5 rebounds.

If and when he steps on the court with a Nuggets uniform, he’ll have done something no other player has ever done.
