Nikola Vucevic Talks About Why He Signed $60 Million Extension With Bulls
Gary A. Vasquez-USA TODAY Sports

NBA All-Star big man Nikola Vucevic signed a three-year, $60 million contract extension with the Chicago Bulls on June 28.

Vucevic would have become an unrestricted free agent on June 30 had he and the Bulls not reached an extension. The former Orlando Magic star is excited to remain in Chicago.

“I’m excited to continue my journey as a Chicago Bull,” Vucevic said. “Since I have arrived in Chicago, everyone in the organization has been incredibly welcoming to my family and me. I am motivated more than ever to achieve our mutual goals as a team. I want to thank the Reinsdorf family and Artūras for continuing to believe in me. I also want to thank Bulls fans for the constant support, you guys are the best part about playing in Chicago. We will work harder than ever to bring success to the city of Chicago.”

Vucevic averaged 17.6 points, 11.0 rebounds and 3.2 assists this past season for the Bulls while shooting 52.0% from the field, 34.9% from beyond the arc, and 83.5% from the free-throw line. He was third in the NBA in double-doubles (51).

Despite having Vucevic and star guards DeMar DeRozan and Zach LaVine, the Bulls missed the playoffs this past season. Chicago lost the 8-9 play-in game to the Miami Heat in South Beach after winning the 9-10 play-in game against the Toronto Raptors.

Vucevic is averaging 18.2 points and 11.1 rebounds since coming to the Bulls. He has a strong relationship with Chicago executive vice president of basketball operations Arturas Karnisovas, league sources told NBA Analysis Network.

“During his time in Chicago, Nikola has proven that he is a special player both on and off the court,” Karnisovas said about Vucevic. “He has produced at an elite level since we acquired him and will remain an integral part of our foundation moving forward.”
