Raptors' Scottie Barnes deserves consideration as All-Star replacement

Scottie Barnes is the future star of the Raptors. Toronto is building their roster around him — as illustrated by the moves to trade Pascal Siakam and OG Anunoby. Barnes has been the focal point of its offensive and defensive system all season. For the most part, he's handled the extra responsibilities well.

According to Brain Scalabrine, who was on a recent episode of Sirius XM's NBA Dash Radio, Barnes should be selected as Julius Randle's All-Star replacement.

"When Adam Silver picks a replacement, he's going to pick Scottie Barnes," Sacalbrine said. "I'm not calling him a snub, let's be clear. He's not more deserving than the guys that were picked, but he's more deserving than the next guys. Jimmy Butler, Trae Young, and Derrick White, Scottie Barnes should be the next guy that Adam Silver chooses."

Barnes is in his third NBA season. He's averaging 20.2 points, 8.2 rebounds, and 5.8 assists on 47.6% shooting from the field and 35.9% from 3-point range. He's also proving he's a capable defender, both on the wing and as a helper.

However, Barnes' age could go against him, as could the Raptors struggles this season. After all, part of being an All-Star is being on a team that's tasted some form of success over the first half of the season. The Raptors currently sit twelfth in the Eastern Conference and have a losing record of 17-30. That record will likely play a part in the decision-making process.

Still, Barnes is among the future stars of the NBA. Allowing him to make his first All-Star game will help elevate his status as one of the best young players in the league. It will also raise his profile among NBA fans around the world. After all, if you're going to be a star player, you have to be a recognizable name.

Randle's injury has opened the door for a player to step into the All-Star game. Barnes should be that player. His performances and future potential are both legitimate reasons why he warrants the spot.
