Report: Lakers, forward Stanley Johnson agree to two-year deal

Former eighth overall pick Stanley Johnson is in his first season with the Los Angeles Lakers, having already signed three separate 10-day contracts with the club in the last month-plus. It looks like the seventh-year forward will be sticking around with the historic franchise a bit longer.

Lakers had been discussing some two-for-one trades along the roster margins, but ultimately landed on keeping Johnson in 15th spot, especially because of his willingness to agree on a team option for year, per sources. That keeps some deal-making flexibility for LA this summer.

Johnson has taken the court in 14 games for the underachieving Lakers thus far and made six starts, averaging 6.4 points, 2.6 rebounds, 1.3 assists and 21.2 minutes per contest. After being selected in the first round of the 2015 NBA Draft by the Detroit Pistons, Johnson spent the first three-plus seasons of his career in the Motor City.

The 25-year-old's best campaign came in 2017-18, when he averaged career-highs in points (8.7), assists (1.6), steals (1.4) and minutes per contest (27.4) across 69 games, including a career-best 50 starts. Johnson was part of a massive three-team trade in February 2019 that saw him land with the New Orleans Pelicans.

Johnson played 48 games with the Pistons and 18 with the Pelicans during the 2018-19 season, before signing with the Toronto Raptors in July 2019. He suited up for 86 games across two seasons while with Toronto and signed with the Chicago Bulls in September 2021.

The former Arizona Wildcat signed his first 10-day contract with Los Angeles on Dec. 24, 2021.
