Why Cleveland Cavaliers star Donovan Mitchell would be ideal for the Lakers

The Los Angeles Lakers stood pat at the Feb. 8 trade deadline, but they are expected to add Spencer Dinwiddie via the buy-out market once he clears waivers. Rob Pelinka will now turn his attention toward the summer. He will likely be planning a potential big swing to add another star talent.

On Friday, Jovan Buha of The Athletic reported that the Lakers front office has its eyes on three separate stars ahead of the offseason.

"The Lakers plan to use the three picks that they will have available this summer — 2031, 2029 and either 2024 or 2025, depending on which pick the New Orleans Pelicans choose to receive as part of their return for 2019’s Anthony Davis trade — to pursue a star via trade," Buha reported. "Three potential targets are Donovan Mitchell, Trae Young and Kyrie Irving, according to team and league sources. The Athletic has previously reported on the franchise’s interest in Young and Irving."

Donovan Mitchell would likely be the best fit with the Lakers. His style of play would fit well next to LeBron James and Anthony Davis. He's also a better long-term fit for the franchise than Trae Young, who has significant issues on the defensive end and Kyrie Irving comes with baggage. Mitchell is a consummate professional.

Furthermore, the Cleveland Cavaliers star is a clutch performer. He ups his game when the lights are shining brightest. He would elevate the Lakers' ceiling and their floor. He is also the most likely to be available via trade. Mitchell has consistently refused to discuss his contract situation in Cleveland. He will be entering the final year of his contract next season.

Regardless of who Rob Pelinka decides to target, if he can land one of those three stars, his decision to stand pat on Thursday will be justified. If the Lakers want to convince LeBron they're serious about helping him win another championship ring, bringing in another All-Star talent is the way to do it. Mitchell is made for the big leagues. He would thrive in a Purple and Gold uniform. Most importantly, Lakers fans would love him.

Whether the Cavaliers would be willing to part with Mitchell in the summer remains to be seen. However, their chance to avoid losing him for nothing is quickly dwindling. In typical Hollywood fashion, the upcoming offseason will be can't-miss-TV for NBA fans around the world.
