49ers CB Samuel Womack(MCL) placed on IR, to miss 6-8 weeks
Kyle Terada-USA TODAY Sports

The San Francisco 49ers announced that they are placing cornerback Samuel Womack on Injured Reserve, causing him to miss at least the next four weeks of the season.

Womack was expected to go on Injured Reserve after sustaining an MCL injury during the final play of Wednesday's practice, according to head coach Kyle Shanahan, and the 49ers made the move official on Saturday.

The cornerback is now expected to miss six-to-eight weeks, according to Shanahan, but will not require surgery, and is expected to return at some point this season.

"I think it's like six to eight weeks, something like that," Shanahan said of Womack's timetable to return.

Womack (5-10, 189) is in his second season with the 49ers after being selected in Round 5 of the 2022 NFL Draft. He had 19 tackles in 16 games as a rookie with one interception, one forced fumble, and one fumble recovery.

Womack played nine snaps on defense and 17 snaps on special teams in the Week 1 opener against the Pittsburgh Steelers and was credited with one tackle.

The San Francisco 49ers will move on without the second-year cornerback in Week 2, where they match up against the Los Angeles Rams on the road in a divisional matchup.
