49ers give latest sign they know recent draft pick was a mistake

The San Francisco 49ers have promoted running back Jeremy McNichols from the practice squad to their 53-man roster.

McNichols, in his second spell with the Niners having also played for the 49ers in 2017, takes the roster spot vacated by Kalia Davis, who was placed on injured reserve on Wednesday.

In a corresponding move, the 49ers signed defensive tackle Taylor Stallworth to the practice squad, giving San Francisco more depth at an area where they have significant injury issues.

San Francisco promoted McNichols over 2022 third-round pick Tyrion Davis-Price, who was waived on December 6 before being re-signed to the practice squad.

Limited to special teams snaps in his one slice of game action this season against the Seahawks in Week 14, McNichols' elevation won't have any impact on the offense unless more injuries hit at the running back position. San Francisco has been without second-string back Elijah Mitchell (knee) for the last two games. 

Yet the 49ers clearly at this point have more faith in him than Davis-Price, providing the latest sign that their decision to pick the former LSU star on the second day of last year's draft was an error in judgement.
