49ers Land Ex-Steelers Running Back
Charles LeClaire-USA TODAY Sports

The 49ers are re-signing former Steelers running back Jeremy McNichols after releasing him from their active roster, the team announced on Friday. They signed him on December 21st to aid with help due to several injuries in the room. He has played in two games for the team in his career.

In 33 career games, McNichols has rushed for 364 yards and one touchdown, along with 40 receptions for 295 yards and one touchdown. In 2021, McNichols rushed for 156 yards on 41 carries (3.8 average) and had 28 receptions for 240 yards (8.6 average) and a touchdown. He was signed by the Steelers at the beginning of training camp in 2022 before suffering a shoulder injury that put him on the shelf.

Pittsburgh was searching for help last year with running back depth before they knew just how good Jaylen Warren was last year in training camp. McNichols’ injury was one of the catalysts that allowed Warren to showcase what he could do in a training camp setting consistently.

McNichols has played on nine NFL teams since coming into the league in 2017 as a member of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. He most notably played for the Tennessee Titans as the backup to Derrick Henry in 2020 and 2021. He has not registered a rushing a game since 2021 when he was in Nashville in that role.
