49ers place defensive starter on season-ending injured reserve

One San Francisco 49ers defender’s postseason is over before it even began.

Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reported Saturday that the Niners have put defensive lineman Clelin Ferrell on injured reserve with a knee injury, thus ending his season. San Francisco is activating safety George Odum off IR in a corresponding move.

Ferrell, a former first-round pick, had already been ruled out earlier in the week for Saturday’s divisional playoff game against the Green Bay Packers. It is a sizable blow for the Niners as Ferrell had started all 17 regular-season games for them, recording 3.5 sacks and a career-high 13 QB hits.

The No. 1-seeded Niners will still be heavily favored to take care of business against the Packers regardless though. This may also be the opportunity for the former champion defensive lineman who San Francisco recently signed to really make his mark.
