Bo Melton Making Strong Case To Earn Spot On Packers’ Roster

One of the most surprising training camp battles for the Green Bay Packers has come at the wide receiver position. Many expected the team to keep five players at the position, with Christian Watson, Romeo Doubs, Jayden Reed, Samori Toure and Dontayvion Wicks locked into those spots.

But, there have been some undrafted players making noise all offseason, which has led to the Packers considering a sixth wide receiver on the 53-man roster. One of those players is Bo Melton out of Rutgers.

Melton has incredible speed, as he ran a 4.34 40-yard dash in the pre-draft process. That speed and agility have been on display all offseason, as he is has been lining up in the slot and stretching the field.

But, to earn the 53-man roster spot, the Packers have made it very clear what has to be done. Guys need to make an impression on special teams and do the dirty work as players that far down the depth chart aren’t going to have major roles in the offense.

“Blocking is not always the sexy thing to do,” said Matt LaFleur on Sunday, “and you guys love to give me crap for coming up here and talking about guys’ blocking, but it’s an important part of our offense. A lot of those guys had some key blocks on some those touchdown runs. Bo Melton on Wilson’s first touchdown. On Goodson’s touchdown, Wicks had a block on the goal line as well. I thought, all in all, receivers did a really nice job blocking.”

Melton has done both, with the first preseason game against the Cincinnati Bengals being his latest showcase. He was key in Emanuel Wilson’s first touchdown of the evening, throwing a perfect block to seal the hole for him to run through.

While that block was the highlight everyone will talk about, Melton seemingly has the inside track to being the sixth wide receiver on the roster. He played 12 snaps on special teams, compared to only one for Malik Heath, who is his direct competition.

This week will be huge for Melton, as the Packers are facing off with the New England Patriots. Two joint practices are going to be had in addition to their second preseason game. Some more good performances will be needed for Melton to earn the roster spot that he has been working so hard to get.
