Bo Scarbrough explains what’s next in life after football

On March 8, former Alabama running back Bo Scarbrough announced his retirement from football. On Sunday, he revealed what’s next for him.

“As I move on from playing football my next step is to get into player development and help young athletes to be smart moving forward and how to carry themselves and be respectful to everyone cause you never know who you may be talking to. So player development is next for me,” Scarbrough wrote on X.

Most recently, Scarbrough was playing with the Birmingham Stallions of the UFL. In the 2023 campaign, Scarbrough secured the starting running back spot for the team, boosting them to a league title.

In the championship, Scarbrough tallied 13 carries for 135 yards, including a 70-yard run and a 36-yard touchdown. He appeared in six games with five starts, making 84 carries for 352 yards and one touchdown.

Despite his standout performance, Scarbrough ultimately decided to retire halfway through the team’s 2024 spring training camp.

“You can love this game all you want. But at the end of the day, the game can’t love you back because it’s not a person; it’s a ball,” Scarbrough said. “I have so much respect for the people still playing. And when it’s your time, you’ll know it’s your time.”

“We were blessed to have Bo as a part of our football family, he is a champion on and off the field,” UFL head of football operations Daryl Johnston said. “He is an outstanding representative of his community and the state of Alabama. We wish him the very best in his retirement and know he will be successful using his passion for the game in the next chapter of his journey.”

Alabama will never forget Bo Scarbrough

While Scarbrough’s struggled to find a consistent role at the professional level, he was dominant in his three seasons at Alabama. In his sophomore and junior seasons, Scarbrough amassed 249 rushing attempts for 1,408 yards and 19 scores.

He ran for two rushing touchdowns and an Alabama bowl game record 180 yards against Washington in the 2016 Peach Bowl. He was named the game’s offensive MVP.
