Broncos' Deal With S Brandon Jones: Contract Details & Grade
Sam Navarro-USA TODAY Sports

After a lot of activity during NFL free agency in 2023, the Denver Broncos were expected to be less active, but they've managed to sign some free agents to multi-year deals and bring back several players.

I'm examining the details of each contract as they're revealed. We'll continue our review of multi-year contracts with safety Brandon Jones, who spent the past four years with the Miami Dolphins.

Contract Details

Summary: Three years, $20M, $11M fully guaranteed.

Contract Breakdown

  • 2024: $5.5M signing bonus (fully guaranteed), $1.245M base salary, $255K per-game roster bonus.
  • 2025: $5.74M base salary ($4.255M fully guaranteed), $510K per-game roster bonus.
  • 2026: $6.24M base salary, $510K per-game roster bonus.

Cap charges: $3.318M in 2024, $8.083M in 2025, $8.583M in 2026

Gut Reaction

The Broncos gave Jones what is essentially a "two years then we'll see" deal, though they could cut him with a post-June 1 designation in 2025 to spread out the dead money charge. Still, Denver would be on the hook for $4.255M if he were cut.

Given that Jones hasn't started many games, the contract does carry some risk, but he has improved over time. The Broncos committed a fair amount of money but didn't necessarily overpay him.

If Jones continues to improve, this could go down as a bargain signing. The Broncos got great value out of a two-year contract for Darian Stewart back in 2015. It will be interesting to see if Jones can do the same here.

Again, the contract isn't without risk, but if Jones can deliver, there's potential for high reward.

Grade: B
