Cardinals add former Chiefs RB Darrel Williams, cut Jaylen Samuels

The Arizona Cardinals made a swap in their running back room Tuesday, adding former Kansas City Chiefs back Darrel Williams on a one-year deal and cutting ties with Jaylen Samuels.

Williams, 27, spent the first four seasons of his NFL career with the Chiefs after signing with the team as an undrafted free agent in 2018. Williams tallied 10 rushing touchdowns and four receiving touchdowns during his time with the Chiefs, along with another two rushing touchdowns in the playoffs. He became a free agent after the 2021 season.

The Cardinals finished eighth in total offense last year and third in rushing touchdowns but were 22nd in yards per rushing attempt. Arizona relied on the duo of James Conner and Chase Edmonds at running back, but they allowed the latter to reach free agency. Edmonds signed a two-year deal with the Miami Dolphins.

Samuels, 25, was a fifth-round pick of the Pittsburgh Steelers in 2018, but he never found a consistent role in the offense. After slowing getting phased out, Samuels was released just prior to the 2021 regular season and spent the year on the Steelers' and Houston Texans' practice squads. He was signed by the Cardinals to a futures contract in January.

Arizona also has 2022 sixth-round pick Keaontay Ingram and 2020 seventh-round pick Eno Benjamin among the other running back options on the roster.
