Cardinals release OT D.J. Humphries amid a lingering knee injury

Even though they have made multiple moves during NFL Free Agency, the Arizona Cardinals made a difficult decision to release a player who cemented a lasting impact on the franchise.

According to NFL Network insider Tom Pelissero on X (formerly Twitter), Arizona has parted ways with offensive tackle D.J. Humphries.

“The Cardinals released longtime OT D.J. Humphries,” Pelissero said.

Originally, Humphries was drafted by Arizona in the first round (24th overall) of the 2015 NFL Draft.

Since being introduced as a Cardinal, Humphries started all 98 games he appeared in. Because of his peers recognizing his exceptional play on the field, he became a Pro Bowler in 2021.

After suffering an ACL tear last season though, the University of Florida product has yet to return to 100% health. Humphries played 15-of-17 games due to this injury which is similar to the one Kyler Murray endured.

Prior to his release, Humphries still had two years remaining on his contract with Arizona.

But by the Cardinals letting go of one of the team’s longest-tenured players, Kelvin Beachum, Trystan Colon or Elijah Wilkinson will be their starting left tackle unless there is another free agency signing or if they draft in that position.

Without a team now, Humphries will continue to recover while also looking for another opportunity in the NFL elsewhere.
