Chargers need LB Khalil Mack to capitalize off dominant performance

Chargers linebacker Khalil Mack is potentially recapturing the form that makes him one of the most fearsome pass-rushers in the league, which his team desperately needs.

Despite registering zero sacks in his first three games, the former NFL Defensive Player of the Year erupted in a 24-17 victory over the Raiders with a career-high six sacks and two forced fumbles.

"Mack capitalized on a rookie quarterback making his first start and a struggling offensive line," wrote Kris Rhim of ESPN. "And the Chargers will need him to be this version of himself moving forward, especially as Joey Bosa nurses toe and hamstring injuries."

Bosa injured his hamstring in Week 1 — which has limited in practice throughout the season, per Rhim — and sat out Sunday against Las Vegas after he injured his toe in Week 3. Since both injuries are starting to linger, it could reduce the four-time Pro Bowler's effectiveness.

The Chargers can't afford this since their defense must improve. It has allowed the NFL's second-most yards (1,616) and fifth-most points (104). If Mack builds off this performance, that would be ideal for Los Angeles.

While some of his dominance against the Raiders tied to rookie QB Aidan O'Connell making his first start, Chargers HC Brandon Staley believes the 32-year-old can still play at an elite level.

"This guy is one of the best edge players of a generation, and he is still that guy — he just showed everybody, I'm still that guy," Staley said following the victory, per the Associated Press.

After a 2-2 start, the Chargers are still in playoff contention in a loaded AFC. Mack carrying a spotty defense will help them avoid falling out of the hunt and show why many believe he's still a transcendent talent.
