Chiefs RB Clyde Edwards-Helaire placed on IR with MCL sprain

The Kansas City Chiefs avoided a potential disaster for their backfield when it was learned that starting running back Clyde Edwards-Helaire would hopefully not miss more than "a few weeks" because of the MCL sprain he suffered in the third quarter of Sunday's loss to the Buffalo Bills that dropped the Chiefs to 2-3 on the season.

As Myles Simmons noted for Pro Football Talk, the Chiefs officially placed Edwards-Helaire on injured reserve on Tuesday. The ball-carrier will be sidelined for a minimum of three games, per league rules, and will first be eligible to return for the Week 9 matchup against the Green Bay Packers on Nov. 7.

Edwards-Helaire heads to IR leading the Chiefs with 304 rushing yards on 65 carries. Veteran Darrel Williams, the next man up on the depth chart, has 99 rushing yards with two touchdowns on the ground and seven catches for 45 yards this season.

Kansas City will attempt to return to winning ways this Sunday in a road showdown with the 2-3 Washington Football Team.
