Colts Part Ways With Wide Receivers, Safety Amid Roster Cuts
USA TODAY Sports

Cut day in the NFL is officially upon us, and the Indianapolis Colts will continue to whittle down their roster to 53 players by 4:00 pm ET today.

The Colts have already made a pair of moves to kickoff the morning. NFL Network's Tom Pelissero is reporting the Colts have waived wide receiver Mike Strachan.

"The #Colts are waiving WR Michael Strachan, per source," Pelissero said on X.

Strachan was a seventh-round pick of the Colts in the 2021 NFL Draft. Lauded for his size (6'5", 224 pounds) and athleticism, the Colts took a chance on Strachan hoping he could develop into a legitimate threat. But unfortunately, outside of a few standout performances int he preseason, Strachan could never find a role in Indy.

In two seasons, Strachan amassed just five catches for 85 yards. Because Strachan is not an active member on special teams, his road to a roster spot was going to be challenging. Unfortunately, the "MegaStrachan" phenomenon is now over.

Strachan was not the only wide receiver the Colts cut ties with this morning. Pelissero is also reporting the Colts have waived wide receiver D.J. Montgomery.

"The #Colts are waiving WR D.J. Montgomery, per source. He'll likely be back on the practice squad if he clears,"  Pelissero mentioned.

Montgomery was an addition to the Colts after Ashton Dulin was lost for the season with a torn ACL. Montgomery saw action in the final two preseason games for the Colts and made some plays. The Colts liked what they saw, but need more time to evaluate what Montgomery brings. If he can clear waivers, look for the Colts to bring Montgomery back on the practice squad.

The Colts made another move this morning to get closer to the 53-man mark. According to ESPN 's Adam Schefter, the Colts are releasing safety Ronnie Harrison.

"Colts are releasing veteran safety Ronnie Harrison," Schefter posted on X.

Harrison was signed by the Colts during training camp to provide competition to a banged up safety room. Harrison brought a veteran presence to the room and plenty of starting experience. In his five-year career, Harrison has 45 starts and has tallied 223 tackles, 5.5 sacks, and five interceptions.

However, Harrison never really flashed in training camp and hardly cracked the second-team. With the Colts safety group now healthy and ready for the season, Harrison was the odd man out. He will be playing elsewhere in his sixth NFL season.

The Colts still have plenty of roster cuts still to come as they finalize their roster. Do not be surprised if the Colts are active on the waive wire as they look to add talent to the team.
