Commanders named as team that could pull off blockbuster trade for 49ers WR Deebo Samuel on Day 2 of the draft
Cary Edmondson-USA TODAY Sports

It's clear the San Francisco 49ers are fine with trading Deebo Samuel after the news that came out during the first round of the 2024 NFL Draft.

So, what's stopping the 9ers from helping out their old buddy in new Washington Commanders GM Adam Peters? The Commanders do have a solid duo of receivers in Terry McLaurin and Jahan Dotson, but they could certainly find a way to utilize Samuel and make him a big part of the offense.

A to Z Sports San Francisco's Nicholas McGee thinks the Commanders are one of the few teams that could pull off the blockbuster trade.

There's an obvious connection here. Adam Peters, who was in the 49ers' front office when Samuel was drafted back in 2019, is now running the show for the Commanders, who hold picks 36, 40, 67, 78, and 100 on day two.

Washington has the second-most cap space in the NFL behind the Patriots with $43.4 million at their disposal.

The Commanders already have an excellent receiver in Terry McLaurin. After him, however, only Jahan Dotson had over 500 receiving yards last year among the receivers on the depth chart. McLaurin and Samuel would form one of the better receiver duos in the league and put second overall pick Jayden Daniels in an excellent position to succeed in year one. - Nicholas McGee, A to Z Sports San Francisco

A big factor involving NFL trades is the acquiring team must have the proper cap space to trade for the player before everything is signed off on. Samuel's 2024 base salary is currently set at $20.972 million. Therefore, the acquiring team would need at least that much in cap space.

And, of all the teams that make sense within that context, the Commanders are sitting the prettiest with their five Day 2 picks. They could also restructure Samuel's deal once he's brought in, in order to help with the base salary/cap hit.

The last factor that weights heavily in this is timing. The Commanders would have to make this happen by the time Day 2 starts, really, because they'll obviously use whatever picks they could use in the trade as Rounds 2 and 3 roll on.

If there's a way to show even more how invested this franchise is in Jayden Daniels, well, this would certainly be the most concrete way of doing just that.
