Commanders release free-agent pickup Marcus Kemp

The Washington Commanders have started their player cuts to get to its initial 53-man roster. It began with a bit of a surprise. Washington is releasing wide receiver Marcus Kemp.

Kemp was one of the Commanders’ first free agent signing this offseason. He had two previous stints with the Kansas City Chiefs, where Commanders offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy spent ten years, including the last five as the Chiefs offensive coordinator.

Kemp’s signing was viewed as a replacement for former Washington wideout Cam Sims. Sims had developed into a fan favorite with the Commanders. But Kemp’s familiarity with Bieniemy seemed as if his role on the team would be a better fit.

Yet, Kemp’s odds were low to contribute at wide receiver. He’s more equipped for special teams. However, the Commanders entered training camp deep at the wide receiver position.

Terry McLaurin, Curtis Samuel, Jahan Dotson, and Dyami Brown head the room. However, the Commanders have seen strong performances from Dax Milne, Byron Pringle, and undrafted rookie Mitchell Tinsley.

Pringle is also a former Chiefs player, and he can contribute on offense immediately compared to Kemp.

Marcus Kemp, who turned 28 years old on Aug. 14, will look to see if he hitches on another team. Or if the Commanders consider him for the practice squad.
