Cowboys' Kelvin Joseph reportedly met with Dallas police for hours amid murder investigation

One day after it was learned that Dallas Cowboys cornerback Kelvin Joseph was considered "a person of interest" by the Dallas Police Department in a murder investigation regarding the March 18 shooting of a 20-year-old man named Cameron Ray, Barry Sorrels, Joseph's attorney, emphatically stated that his client "did not shoot" Ray.

It was said earlier on Friday that the Cowboys were encouraging Joseph to cooperate with the police investigation. Matt Howerton of Dallas' WFAA has since reported the 2021 second-round draft pick was questioned by police "for hours" ahead of the weekend:

"Kelvin Joseph did not shoot Cameron Ray," Sorrels explained to The Dallas Morning News. "Mr. Ray's death is a tragedy, and Kelvin extends his deepest condolences for the family's loss. On the night of March 17, Kelvin was unarmed and was not looking for violence. He found himself in a situation that escalated without his knowledge or consent. Along with condolences to the Ray family, Kelvin apologizes to the Dallas community for being anywhere near this type of incident. The investigation is ongoing, and we intend to respect the process."

Per Charean Williams of Pro Football Talk, Sorrels admits Joseph was an unarmed passenger inside a black SUV when gunshots fired from that vehicle allegedly struck Ray following an altercation between two groups of people outside a bar earlier that same night. Williams adds that Texas law leaves the door open for anyone inside the SUV at the time of the shooting to be charged.

"The Dallas Cowboys are aware of the tragic incident that occurred in Dallas on March 18," the team said in a released statement shared on Friday afternoon. "First and foremost, our hearts go out to Mr. Ray's family and loved ones. The organization is aware of Kelvin Joseph's possible connection to this incident. We are in contact with Dallas law enforcement and have alerted the NFL office. We have no further comment at this time."
