Cowboys must get this WR more involved to strengthen passing attack

When the Dallas Cowboys acquired wide receiver Brandin Cooks from the Houston Texans in March, it appeared they were getting a difference-maker. However, he has yet to make an impact.

Through seven games, he logged 17 receptions on 29 targets, scored two TDs and is averaging a career-low 9.7 yards per reception. In a 28-23 loss to the Philadelphia Eagles on Sunday, he only had one reception for seven yards.

On Monday, Dallas head coach Mike McCarthy grew frustrated with multiple questions about Cooks' lack of touches.

"I don't play fantasy football," he said, per The Athletic's Jon Machota. "Yes, I'd love to see everybody get the ball. But when you throw for [374] yards, and you got to come in here and answer questions about someone not getting the ball, I mean, come on, that's not a real evaluation."

McCarthy actually has a point. Although Cooks hasn't produced big numbers this season, that hasn't negatively affected quarterback Dak Prescott. The former Pro Bowler has completed 70.2 percent of his passes for 2,011 yards, 13 TDs, five interceptions and a 67.5 QBR, fourth in the league.

Yet, the Dallas passing offense is too reliant on WR CeeDee Lamb. He is the only Cowboy with 50 or more receptions and 800 or more yards.

"It just feels like if CeeDee doesn't catch 14 or more passes, then they struggle to outscore teams," an AFC scout told ESPN's Jeremy Fowler.

The Cowboys (5-3) should try to get Cooks more involved. In his first nine seasons, he crossed the 1,000-yard mark six times. So, he can become a key contributor who augments the Dallas passing attack.
