Dolphins trade for Chiefs RB DeAndre Washington

The Miami Dolphins acquired a new weapon for rookie quarterback Tua Tagovailoa ahead of Tuesday's trade deadline.

NFL Network's Ian Rapoport tweeted that Miami acquired running back DeAndre Washington from the Kansas City Chiefs in exchange for what will likely be third-day draft compensation. Earlier in the day, Miami sent wide receiver Isaiah Ford to the New England Patriots for a 2022 seventh-round draft pick.

Washington was surplus to requirements in Kansas City even before the Chiefs added three-time Pro Bowler Le'Veon Bell last month. In total, Washington tallied only five yards on three carries with K.C. this season.

Myles Gaskin leads the Dolphins with 387 rushing yards, while Matt Breida is second on the team among running backs with 128 yards. Miami heads into Week 9 of the season 28th in the NFL and averaging a paltry 98.0 rushing yards per contest. The Dolphins are one of only six clubs averaging under 100 rushing yards a game.

Washington gained 387 yards on the ground and added 292 receiving yards with three rushing scores while with what were then known as the Oakland Raiders in 2019. The Raiders selected Washington in the fifth round of the 2016 draft.

Miami travels to play the Arizona Cardinals this Sunday.
