Dolphins WR Allen Hurns opts out of 2020 NFL season

Miami Dolphins wide receiver Allen Hurns has opted out of the 2020 NFL season scheduled to be held this fall amid the worsening coronavirus pandemic.

The 28-year-old addressed his decision via Twitter

"Definitely wasn't an easy decision but I've decided to opt out of the 2020 season to do what's best for my family and especially with a baby boy on the way. I will continue to support my team and brothers across the league wholeheartedly and wishing them the best going forward all season, all love."

Miami head coach Brian Flores offered his blessing via a statement shared by the Dolphins:

As noted by ESPN's Cameron Wolfe, Hurns is the first Miami player to opt out during training camp. Players have until 4 pm ET on Thursday to inform teams of opt-out decisions.

In 14 appearances with the Dolphins last year, Hurns caught 32 of 47 targets for 416 receiving yards and a pair of scores. The two-year contract extension he signed last November tolls to the 2021 campaign per an agreement between the NFL and NFL Players Association.
