The Philadelphia Eagles are turning loose an offensive coach with ties to Pittsburgh Steelers assistant general manager Andy Weidl.

Quarterbacks coach Alex Tanney has been let out of his contract by the Eagles, according to a report Jeremy Fowler of ESPN. The Eagles have already fired offensive coordinator Brian Johnson, and are apparently looking to overhaul a significant portion of their offensive staff.

Tanney, a former NFL quarterback with the Kansas City Chiefs, Dallas Cowboys, Cleveland Browns, Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Tennessee Titans, Buffalo Bills, Indianapolis Colts, and New York Giants from 2012-20, got his start in coaching with the Eagles in 2021.

He served as quality control coach for the Eagles in 2021, the last season that Weidl worked for Philadelphia. Weidl left the Eagles for his hometown Steelers in 2022.

Tanney was promoted to assistant quarterbacks coach in 2022 and then quarterbacks coach before the 2023 season.

The Steelers are currently in the process of searching for a new offensive coordinator, having interviewed two candidates so far. But they will also likely need a new quarterbacks coach, as Mike Sullivan is not expected to return to that role and has been interviewing for other positions.

Tanney could be a candidate for the Steelers to add to their offensive coaching staff, considering his connection to Weidl.
