First-round bust and former New York Jets offensive tackle Mekhi Becton has been linked to the NFC East team, Dallas Cowboys in a rumor this offseason. According to a report, the tackle is probably a realistic option for America’s team as they head into this year’s draft. There is tons of talent in the offensive lineman position so they may sign Becton as a last resort. This could be the same case for every other team in the league who are looking to add a quick low-cost veteran.

The Cowboys will probably do this after this year’s draft once they get their hands on this year’s talent. However, adding Becton on a one-year deal could provide the Cowboys a safe option if they don’t get to add who they want this draft. Earlier this free agency, the Louisville product had the opportunity to visit the Cincinnati Bengals. There hasn’t been any deal set yet so he could get a future contract before the season starts.

Becton has been dealing with knee injuries despite playing all 16 games last season, but in those two previous years, he only played in one game. The New York Jets selected him in the 2020 NFL Draft with the No. 11 pick overall. Becton had the opportunity to transition to right tackle in 2022 after missing the entire 2021 season. The signing of Tyron Smith could indicate that the Jets probably won’t bring him back for another season.

There will be plenty of teams that are going to need an extra offensive lineman, but Becton like other free agents will probably have to wait. The Jets are continuing to trim down their offensive line after cutting guard Laken Tomlinson as well. However, Becton could intrigue the Cowboys as a last-minute option.

First-Round Bust Mekhi Becton Linked to NFC East Team Dallas Cowboys

He May Find His New Home Soon

The loss of Smith seems like it could be a big loss for the Cowboys even if they focus on drafting a new offensive lineman this year. However, Dallas doesn’t have a lot of spending money this offseason so adding a low-cost veteran like Becton will likely happen. There have been some rumors that David Bakhtiari could land with America’s team but that may be unlikely. He could cost more than Becton who’s been having a track record of injuries.

Bakhtiari has been dealing with injuries too but the thing is that he has an excellent track record of success with the Packers. Becton hasn’t been able to remain consistent throughout the years in New York. Chuma Edoga was extended for a new contract so they could have enough money to sign Becton. A cheap one-year deal would be the likelihood for America’s team as they navigate this year’s draft.

Becton’s rookie year was showing some promising strides but his injuries have stopped his top-level production. When healthy, he can play to his full potential, especially on a team with talent like Zack Martin and Terrence Steele. Becton is a solid swing tackle at his worst.

Other Possible Landing Spots

The New Orleans Saints offensive tackle Ryan Ramczyk isn’t recovering from a knee injury so adding Becton could be a quick fix. It would be like a band-aid to their wound after the number of injuries that Becton suffered. However, it’s crunch time for the Saints in the post-Drew Brees era for a Super Bowl ring. The good news is that Becton could knock off the dust with a new team.

The Chargers are another potential destination under a new Jim Harbaugh who is looking to rebuild the team. However, they don’t have a lot of spending money after forcing some of their star players into free agency this offseason. Becton would have to switch to right tackle opposite of Rashawn Slater.
