First-round NFL mock draft: Where is Tagovailoa going?

2019 was the year of Joe Burrow, who won the Heisman Trophy and national championship and is the overwhelming favorite to be Cincinnati's choice for the No. 1 overall pick. The Ohio native displayed drastic improvement in his senior season at LSU, completing nearly 76 percent of his passes and also showing above-average scrambling ability. The only major knock on Burrow is that he's old for a first-round prospect, set to turn 24 in December. There have already been rumblings that a team with draft capital like the Dolphins would trade up to No. 1 to take Burrow, but it seems almost a foregone conclusion that Burrow will be the first player to float across the Bellagio Fountains in April.

Young is the best defensive lineman prospect of his generation, which is saying a lot given rookie Nick Bosa's success in San Francisco this season. Incredibly, Young recorded 16.5 sacks through his first 12 games this season and has a chance to make a huge impact on a Washington defensive line that already has a lot of talent. New head coach Ron Rivera is probably licking his chops already.

Cornerback is already one of Detroit's strengths, but the addition of Okudah could potentially allow the Lions to shop star Darius Slay after the cornerback seemed disgruntled earlier this season. Okudah is the consensus top cornerback in the 2020 class. He is a shutdown corner with three picks in 13 games this season.

Wide receiver is certainly in play for the Giants, but a deep class could allow them to get a first-round quality wideout in the second round. That would allow them to address their defense in the first round. Simmons is an extremely versatile defender who has potential at either linebacker or safety. The 6-foot-4 senior had 104 tackles and eight sacks in 15 games. 

Tagovailoa was the consensus No. 1 overall draft choice entering the year, but ankle and hip injuries have given him the "injury-prone" label. Before his season-ending injury earlier this season, Tagovailoa completed more than 71 percent of his passes with 33 touchdowns in nine games, albeit with elite receiving weapons in Alabama. He would be entering an optimal situation in Miami with the ability to play when he's ready and learn from Ryan Fitzpatrick.

Is Philip Rivers finished in LA? And if so, do the Chargers find another veteran or turn to a youngster? Herbert is a great option, with optimal NFL size and completed nearly 67 percent of his passes this season.

Carolina's needs are becoming many with the retirement of Luke Kuechly, the departure of Greg Olsen, and the quarterback situation up in the air. It's getting to the point that they should just take the best player on the board. Brown has moved into top 10 draft consideration with a great year, recording 54 tackles and four sacks during the regular season.

The offensive line has been a huge issue in Arizona for multiple seasons, and one that the Cardinals really need to address to help Kyler Murray's development. Wills has plenty of size (6-foot-5, 320 pounds) and has seen his stock increase in 2019.

Jacksonville's defensive talent has plunged significantly over the last two years to the point that they now have several needs such as the defensive line. Kinlaw has increased his stock, with 35 tackles and six sacks through 12 games this season.

Cleveland has been fortunate with the development of left tackle Greg Robinson, but could still use more offensive line help. Thomas is one of the best offensive linemen on the board, standing at 6-foot-5, 320 pounds, as an immediate solution at left tackle.

The Jets have a choice to make about whether to pay Robby Anderson. There are plenty of great options if they move on. Jeudy had 1,163 yards and 10 touchdowns this season and ranks right alongside Julio Jones and Amari Cooper as among the most talented wideouts to come out of Alabama in recent memory.

The Raiders have a lot of early-round capital, and wideout should be a top priority. Lamb has been nothing but productive in college and just finished his best season, with 62 receptions for 1,327 yards and 14 touchdowns in 13 games.

Left tackle Anthony Castonzo is considering retirement this offseason. That would obviously create a major void, and Wirfs can step in immediately to replace him.

Shaquil Barrett was better than the Bucs could have expected in 2019, but now he will be looking for big money in free agency. Chaisson can fill part of the the void, recording 60 tackles and 6.5 sacks this season.

It's become commonplace for teams with young quarterbacks to load up on weapons, and the Broncos need to add more on top of Courtland Sutton. Ruggs hasn't been as productive as teammate Jerry Jeudy, but he still has superstar potential. He had 746 yards and seven scores in 12 games, and could light up the combine.

Cornerback depth was an issue in Atlanta for much of 2019. Henderson hasn't been challenged much in the Florida secondary this year, but he had 33 tackles and 11 passes defensed in nine games.

There might not be a team with more consequential free agents than the Cowboys, who could be set to lose Byron Jones and also have issues at safety. Delpit is clearly one of the elite safeties on the board, with 65 tackles and two picks in 14 games this season.

Miami desperately needs offensive line help after trading Laremy Tunsil before the start of 2019. Becton needs some refinement, but he's a mammoth with left tackle capability, listing at 6-foot-7, 369 pounds.

The Raiders addressed the defensive line and secondary last year, and now it's time to fix their linebacker issues. Murray is a tackling machine with 155 tackles last year and 102 in 14 games this year.

The brother of Vikings wideout Stefon Diggs, Trevon remains a solid first-round prospect. Jacksonville has a need at cornerback after trading star Jalen Ramsey during the season.

Wide receiver will be a high priority for the Eagles this offseason, as they were plagued by injury at the position in 2019 and could move on from Alshon Jeffery, Nelson Agholor, and DeSean Jackson. The 6-foot-4 Higgins averaged nearly 20 yards per reception for the second time in three years, and he had 26 touchdowns in his last two years.

Buffalo has some stars on the defensive line, led by Jerry Hughes, but they aren't exactly young in that area. Epenesa was highly productive again this year, with 49 tackles and 11.5 sacks through 13 games in his junior season.

New England has one of the oldest secondaries in the league and needs to start thinking about the future soon. McKinney had 95 tackles and three picks this season as a true playmaker for the Crimson Tide.

Drew Brees' football future is up in the air, and it remains to be seen if Taysom Hill is the answer to replace him. Love needs some polish, but he has envious tool as a passer with a great arm and plus rushing ability. Sitting for a year in a system like Sean Payton's would be the perfect situation for him.

Protecting Kirk Cousins was Minnesota's highest priority last offseason, and it's still an issue that needs addressing. Jones has emerged as a strong early-round prospect who could fill in immediately.

Miami should be in the business of taking the best player available, and a cornerback would also fill a major need. Fulton has been a shutdown corner lately at LSU.

Seattle is getting old at linebacker, relying on long-time stars Bobby Wagner and K.J. Wright. Queen had a breakout junior season for the Tigers, with 85 tackles and three sacks.

Baltimore like Z'Darius Smith and Terrell Suggs last offseason, and Matthew Judon could be their next pass rusher to leave, creating a need again. Gross-Matos has excellent size and speed and has been productive for the Nittany Lions over the last two seasons, recording eight sacks in 2018 and nine sacks through 11 games this year.

Baun is a potentially perfect fit for Tennessee, giving them a much-needed pass-rusher who could also play the run. He had a huge senior season with 12.5 sacks and 75 tackles for the Badgers.

It's clear that Aaron Rodgers needs more weapons. Jimmy Graham has been a disappointment, and Kmet is an interesting possible replacement. He had a breakout junior season with 43 receptions for 515 yards and six touchdowns in 2019.

San Francisco drafted a steal in Deebo Samuel during the 2019 draft, and Shenault is a similar run-after-the-catch talent. He is excellent with the ball in his hands, though his production has fallen off from last season. He had 764 receiving yards and six total touchdowns in 11 games this year.

The Chiefs really like young cornerback Charvarius Ward, but their cornerback depth is likely to take a hit in free agency this offseason. Arnette saw plenty of playing time in four season at Ohio State, and could be a nice plug-and-play option.
