Former Giants Head Coach Tom Coughlin to Receive Special Honor

Former New York Giants head coach Tom Coughlin, who long before landing in East Rutherford as the two-time Super Bowl-winning leader of the franchise, is to receive a special honor from the Jacksonville Jaguars for his contributions to the franchise during its start-up.

Coughlin, who was the Jaguar's first-ever head coach, a position he held from 1995-2002, will be inducted into the Pride of Jaguars, Jacksonville's equivalent of the Giants' Ring of Honor, which recognizes franchise legends. The induction will take place on a to-be-determined date in 2024.

Coughlin, a Bill Parcells' Giants coaching staff member from 1988-1990 as the receives coach, won a Super Bowl with New York in 1990. He then went to head up Boston College's football program from 1991-1993 before working his way back to the NFL with the Jaguars, whose inaugural season was in 1995.

Jacksonville finished 4-12 in their first season but advanced to the AFC Championship Game in 1996, appearing in the playoffs three more times under Coughlin's watch. He finished 68-60 in the regular season and 4-4 in the playoffs with Jacksonville.

Coughlin and the JAguars parted ways after the 2002 season. He landed with the Giants in 2004, where he and franchise quarterback Eli Manning would add two more Super Bowl trophies to the franchise's four. 

He resigned from his head coaching job after the 2015 season in an emotionally charged press conference and returned to the Jaguars as their executive vice president of football operations in 2017. He was later relieved of his duties in 2019 and has been out of football since, caring for his late wife Judy, who last year passed away at the age of 77 following a lengthy battle with progressive supranuclear palsy (PSP).

Coughlin joins Tony Boselli, Wayne and Delores Weaver, Fred Taylor, Mark Brunell, and Jimmy Smith as Pride of the Jaguars circle members.
