Dante Hall Sounds Off on OC Matt Nagy

“It starts at the top with Matt Nagy. I don’t really know the guy, so this is all speculation. What I do know is this: when Eric Bieniemy was there, we didn’t have this lack of discipline. We didn’t have guys not lining up. We didn’t have guys dropping a league-leading 39 passes. 

The Washington Commanders poached Bieniemy from the Chiefs last offseason, hiring him as their newest offensive coordinator. Bieniemy spent five seasons with the Chiefs, winning the Super Bowl twice and leading the team to top ten marks in points scored and yards gained each season. Kansas City replaced Bieniemy with former Chicago Bears head coach Matt Nagy, who spent the 2022 season as the Chiefs QB coach. Nagy held the OC job in KC before Bieniemy.

Hall continued, “You’re the offensive coordinator. Besides JuJu Smith-Schuster, you’re the only change in the Super Bowl-winning offense. So it must be you. Get these guys in order.”

The Chiefs are pacing to place outside the top ten in points scored for the first time since 2016, a year before the team drafted star quarterback Patrick Mahomes. The Chiefs lost leading wide receiver JuJu Smith-Schuster from last year’s Super Bowl team but returned their entire backfield and star tight end Travis Kelce. However, drops, missed assignments, and killer penalties have handcuffed Mahomes and the Chiefs in 2023.

Kansas City Chiefs: Losers of Three of Their Last Four

The Chiefs have dropped three of four games in December, including losing on Christmas Day at home to the Las Vegas Raiders as double-digit favorites. Quarterback Patrick Mahomes has struggled during that span, tossing five touchdowns to five picks while being sacked 11 times. The team’s receiver room has struggled, highlighted by an offensive offsides penalty by Kadarius Toney in Week 14, negating the go-ahead touchdown with under two minutes remaining. Fellow wideout Marquez Valdes-Scantling also dropped a potential game-winning touchdown in Week 11.
