Giants GM has telling quote on QB Daniel Jones
New York Giants quarterback Daniel Jones Brad Penner-USA TODAY Sports

The New York Giants hired Brian Daboll as their head coach in large part because of what he was able to accomplish with Josh Allen in Buffalo. The big question is whether Daboll will try to replicate that success with Daniel Jones or another quarterback.

Giants general manager Joe Schoen was asked on Tuesday if the team plans to bring in competition for Jones this offseason. He said they will do that at every position but called Daniel Jones the starting quarterback “right now.” Schoen also spoke about the importance of having a quality backup QB.

“We’re gonna bring in competition everywhere, but Daniel Jones is our starting quarterback right now,” Schoen said. “He was injured last year and they had a backup quarterback. We did the same thing with Josh Allen (in Buffalo) last year. The backup quarterback is one of the more important positions in the league, so it’s something we’re gonna look at and we’re gonna address.”

Schoen was the assistant GM with the Bills last season. He was referring to the fact that Buffalo brought in Mitchell Trubisky as insurance behind Allen. Of course, there was absolutely no chance of Trubisky taking Allen’s starting job. Jones’ job might not be as safe as Allen’s was if the Giants bring in a proven veteran.

The Giants were a disaster under Joe Judge, so it would make sense for them to give Jones a real chance with a new head coach. It’s also worth noting that Schoen wasn’t the GM who traded up to draft Jones. He may not be as high on him as former GM Dave Gettleman was.

It can’t make Jones feel all that comfortable about his job status that Schoen called him the starter “right now.” Though, it should motivate him to have his best offseason in what will be a pivotal fourth year.
