A series with a fun history, and yet ANOTHER series where the Chiefs have a winning record (8-5-1), Chiefs vs. Packers. Rematch of Super Bowl I. This matchup hits home for me as a fan as I have lived in Wisconsin my entire life, and have been hearing it from Packer fans since I was a young kid. Today I will be going to Lambeau for this one and hopefully getting the last laugh with Packer fans. In all seriousness, this series has brought me some great memories. Let’s explore them –

Chiefs 23-16 Packers – Arrowhead Stadium – November 8th, 1993

This game, I will dub the Bennie Thompson game. Bennie Thompson spent 2 years in Kansas City as a Safety and special teamer, bringing huge hits on special teams and timely turnovers. Thompson was feared as a box safety in sub packages. Rarely does a player that had that short of a tenure with a team as a non-starter have such an impact, but he did. Thompson had multiple bone-crushing hits, one causing a game-sealing interception for Martin Bayless, and had a key tackle for loss on a screen pass, then after celebrating – pretending he was a dog urinating on a fire hydrant (as I’m sure many Chiefs fans remember). Thompson brought excitement to Arrowhead, but it wasn’t just him. The Chiefs defense was giving a young Brett Favre fits, forcing 6 turnovers. Martin Bayless, Kevin Ross, and Charles Mincy each had interceptions, and Dan Saleaumua caused a key fumble on a goal-line stop, while also recovering a Derrick Thomas forced fumble and returning it for a touchdown. The Chiefs sacked Favre 4 times as well, Derrick Thomas had 2, Safety Doug Terry had 1, and Neil Smith pitched in one as well. When we talk about great Chiefs defenses, we need to remember this 1993 defense – this secondary alone was stacked – Starters were – CB Dale Carter, CB Albert Lewis (should be in the Hall of Fame), CB/FS Kevin Ross, S Charles Mincy, and SS Martin Bayless – then you had talented players like SS Bennie Thompson and S Doug Terry playing in sub packages and making big plays, they don’t make playmaking hard hitting secondaries like this anymore.

Chiefs 40-34 Packers – Lambeau Field – October 12th, 2003

This game was one of the better comebacks in Chiefs history. The Chiefs were down 17 going into the 4th quarter – 31-14 (Packer fans thought they had the game won, as my dad was at the game and was slapped on the back and told “You came a long way for an *** whooping), but then went on a 20-3 run to send the game to overtime. First, Running Back Priest Holmes ran for a 1-yard touchdown, then on the next series, Safety Jerome Woods intercepted Favre and returned it for a 79-yard pick-six. Two Morten Andersen field goals then sent the game to overtime, where Trent Green would hit Eddie Kennison over the top for a 51-yard touchdown to win the game. Then, my dad turned around to the fan that dropped the infamous quote and said “Nice game”, safe to say that the Packer fans were pretty silent after that.

Trent Green was phenomenal in this game, passing for 400 yards, 3 touchdowns, and no turnovers. Priest Holmes had 140 yards from scrimmage and a touchdown, and pass catchers Tony Gonzalez and Johnnie Morton each had a touchdown while going over 100 yards receiving.

Chiefs 19-14 Packers – Arrowhead Stadium – December 18th, 2011

2011 – the struggling Chiefs were set to host a 13-0 Packer team who was favored by 11.5 on the road in Kansas City. Nobody gave the Chiefs a chance, except the Chiefs. Aaron Rodgers was beaten up throughout the day, sacked 4 times, and hit many other times as you see in the above image. Tamba Hali had 3 sacks on the day, and Allen Bailey had one. Hali and Derrick Johnson each forced key fumbles, allowing the offense to grind the clock with a mixed running game consisting of Jackie Battle, Thomas Jones, Dexter McCluster, and Fullback Le’Ron McClain. The lone touchdown of the game for the Chiefs came on a Jackie Battle one-yard rush, as the Chiefs’ power running game with Jackie Battle at 240 lbs, Thomas Jones at 212 lbs and Le’Ron McClain at 260 pounds continued to wear the Packer defense down. A late Aaron Rodgers touchdown wasn’t enough, as the Chiefs took down the defending champs and the undefeated at Arrowhead.

This year’s edition of Chiefs vs. Packers will be the first regular season game the Chiefs have played at Lambeau since 2015. The Packers are on a hot-streak as of late winning 3 out of their last 4 games – and will look to prove they belong in the discussion of good NFL teams by taking down one of the NFL’s best today. Look for Spags to give Jordan Love some looks he hasn’t yet had to deal with this year, to hopefully slow down this young offense that is playing well. I predict a Chiefs win: 28-20.

Lambeau takeover tonight!
