Houston Texans Sign Ex-New York Jets Quarterback Amid CJ Stroud Injury

Two days after starting against the Falcons on December 3, Boyle was released by the Jets. However, as mentioned, his free agency didn’t last long, with the Texans picking him up as they gear up for Week 16, per Mike Garafolo of NFL Network.

“The Texans are signing former Jets QB Tim Boyle to the practice squad, source says. Boyle worked out for the team today,” Garafolo reported.

It will be interesting to see how Boyle figures into the team’s plans moving forward. It is worth noting that he is 0-5 as a starter in his NFL career. In the two starts he had with the Jets this 2023, he completed 41 of his 63 passes for 327 yards and one touchdown. He also had three interceptions and was sacked eight times.

Why Is the Houston Texans Signing Former New York Jets Quarterback Tim Boyle?

The Houston Texans’ Tim Boyle signing comes off the heels of reports that CJ Stroud could not be ready by Week 16 against the Cleveland Browns.

There have been rumors that Stroud is likely to be sidelined as he remains in the concussion protocol. The Texans still have Case Keenum as backup quarterback, and he did well in his Week 15 start against the Tennessee Titans.

However, having Boyle in the practice squad gives the Texans some insurance that they have enough QB depth as they enter an important stretch in their season.

The Texans initially targeted Nathan Rourke and made a claim for him off waivers, but the New England Patriots beat them for the services of the QB. With that, they turned their attention on the former New York Jets signal-caller.

While Boyle didn’t impress in his time with the Jets, at least he has some starting experience that the Texans hope will bring some stability if his number is called.

After the Browns, the Texans play the Tennessee Titans and Indianapolis Colts in their final two games of the campaign. Whether or not Boyle will get a chance to quarterback for Houston remains to be seen.
