Insiders: Jets trading for Packers' Aaron Rodgers may happen sooner than thought

New York Jets fans may not have to wait as long as some think for their team to acquire Green Bay Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers.

"Everybody is saying the Packers can drag this out as long as they want and all this kind of stuff, and the question is why? Why do they want to do that? They've been ready to move on from Aaron for about a year, maybe even a little more," Pro Football Network's Trey Wingo explained during an appearance on "The Zach Gelb Show", per Logan Mullen of Audacy. "And yeah, they have leverage and all that kind of stuff … but it’s in the best interest of both the Packers and the Jets just to get this done."

Wingo, of course, has received praise for reporting that "Rodgers to the Jets is done" days before the four-time NFL Most Valuable Player confirmed during an anticipated appearance on "The Pat McAfee Show" that he intends to play for Gang Green during the 2023 season.

However, Pro Football Talk's Mike Florio and others have pointed out that the Packers could, financially speaking, wait until during or even after the upcoming NFL Draft to complete the trade if the Jets don't meet their asking price for Rodgers.

Depending on the latest report regarding the matter, Green Bay may or may not want a package supposedly "equal" to receiving two first-round draft picks.

"I think it’s going to be faster than you think, and the reason why I say that is the same sources that were telling me what was going to happen were saying they were hearing Aaron Rodgers was going to be in New York by next week," Wingo continued.

It seems Wingo may be somebody in Rodgers' "inner circle" of reporters. Wingo also isn't on an island as it pertains to his take. Former Packers vice president and current Sports Illustrated NFL insider Andrew Brandt took to Twitter Friday to say that the matter "will be resolved long before" the start of organized training activities and "probably within a week or two" of St. Patrick's Day:

The Packers have moved on from Rodgers and ideally would like to add picks for this year's draft. The Jets have no QB1 and missed out on preferred options who joined other teams in free agency.

In the end, it likely would behoove all parties to wrap this up via an agreement that is fair for all involved by the end of March at the absolute latest.
