Jerry Jones highlights expectations for Dak Prescott, Cowboys in 2023

Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones never runs away from expectations. Although it’s been nearly three decades since his franchise last won a Super Bowl, he continues to hold his teams to the highest standards.

That’s no different entering 2023. On Saturday, the team owner spoke with ESPN’s NFL Live as the team hit the field for training camp.

First, Jones was asked for expectations for quarterback Dak Prescott, who enters his eighth NFL season with the franchise.

“Frankly, we’re disappointed we haven’t been knocking at the door of a Super Bowl with Dak before now,” Jones said. “So, certainly he’s very capable and is capable for years — as far as age as concerned — for competing for a Super Bowl.”

Prescott owns a 61-36 record as a starter in Dallas. And while the Cowboys have posted 12-5 records in back-to-back seasons, they’ve had disappointing playoff appearances the past two years.

Those shortcomings don’t influence Jones’ thought process. He still has plenty of faith in Prescott and the rest of his team.

“The big thing is, I’m confident Dak and the team we’ve got together right now has a great chance to do it, no matter whether or not (Tom Brady) is in the NFC or if (Aaron Rodgers) isn’t in the NFC,” he said.

After last season concluded, the Cowboys made major overhauls to the coaching staff. This year, it feels like expectations are even higher in Dallas.

Cowboys holding Trevon Diggs out of practice due to injury

If the Cowboys hope to make a Super Bowl push this season, they’ll probably need a lot of production from cornerback Trevon Diggs. But the two-time Pro Bowler will be out of training camp, at least for a few days.

Head coach Mike McCarthy told reporters that Diggs suffered a bruised toe. McCarthy dismissed the serious nature of the injury, saying there aren’t any major concerns but the team wants to be “smart.”

Additionally, McCarthy doesn’t believe the injury will keep Diggs sidelined long. He said the expectation is that the defensive back can return in a few days.

“I know he wants to be out there,” McCarthy said, per The Athletic. “It’s more of the doctors, just making sure that it’s not more than it is.”

Diggs put together a strong season for the Cowboys in 2022. He appeared in all 17 regular season games, totaling 59 tackles, 14 passes defended, three interceptions and a fumble recovery.

Diggs’ took off in 2021, when he hauled in a remarkable 11 interceptions for the Cowboys. He returned two of those for touchdowns and also accounted for 21 passes defended in 16 contests.
