Los Angeles May Make Shocking Decision To Release Defender
USA TODAY Sports

The Los Angeles Chargers are gearing up for the 2024 season with many new faces, particularly on the coaching staff. The addition of the off-season, of course, is hiring Jim Harbaugh as their new head coach.

Harbaugh brings with him a proven track record of success and is known for his hard-nosed, physical brand of football that emphasizes toughness and dominance at the line of scrimmage. Fans and star players alike welcome this style of play.

However, with Harbaugh's arrival comes the potential for roster changes, and one player who might find himself on the chopping block is defensive end Morgan Fox.

Fox has been a Charger for two years, but his style of play may not align with Harbaugh's vision for the team. Harbaugh's teams typically feature big players on the line, all weighing in at 300 pounds or more.

At 275 pounds, Fox falls short of this mark, and his run defense is not his strongest suit. This could make him an ill fit for Harbaugh's system.

Due to his contract situation, getting rid of Fox is easier said than done. Fox will become a free agent after the 2024 season at age 31.

He signed a two-year deal with the Chargers in March 2023 after initially joining the team on a one-year contract in 2022.

According to Over The Cap, Fox carries a cap hit of $4,750,000 for the Chargers, with $1,250,000 in dead money if he were to be cut. While cutting Fox would only result in a modest cap savings of $3,500,000, it could still be worth considering if Harbaugh intends to reshape the roster to fit his system.

Ultimately, the decision regarding Fox's future with the Chargers will depend on how he fits into Harbaugh's plans and whether the coaching staff believes he can adapt to their style of play.

It's a tough call to make, especially given Fox's tenure with the team and his contributions on the field. However, in the NFL, tough decisions are often necessary to ensure the team's success moving forward.
