Loss to Bills highlighted major defensive problem Cowboys must solve

On Sunday, the Buffalo Bills exposed one of the Dallas Cowboys' biggest problems.

In the 31-10 blowout, Buffalo running back James Cook dismantled the Dallas defense, rushing for a season-high 179 yards and one TD on 25 carries. The Bills finished with 266 rushing yards — the most the Cowboys have allowed since 2012, per the team website.

Cowboys starting defensive tackle Johnathan Hankins was sidelined with an ankle injury, contributing to the defensive woes. Still, star edge-rusher Micah Parsons claimed that wasn't an alibi.

"I don't even really want to comment on what happened, to be honest," Parsons said in a postgame news conference. "I mean, Hank's important, but it was everyone all across the board. I don't think it was just one individual, one particular thing. It was a group effort."

Dallas' run defense is a weakness. The Cowboys (10-4) rank 19th in the league in rushing yards allowed (117.4). In their four losses, they've allowed 767 rushing yards.

"The scheme dictates the personnel, and the personnel isn't geared to defend the run at a high level unless they generate tackles for loss," wrote the 33rd Team's Derrik Klassen. "A year ago, the Cowboys did that. Their 65 tackles for loss in the run game, per TruMedia, tied for second-most in the league. This season, Dallas only has 35 tackles for loss against the run, 23rd in the league."

To solve the problem, Parsons could line up at linebacker more. This season, the Cowboys have had him focus on his pass-rush and frequently used him on the D-line. While he has recorded 12.5 sacks, he's also on track to set a career low in solo tackles (25 in 14 games).

Dallas must quickly solve this issue. Otherwise, teams will continue to exploit it, which could lead to another disappointment in the playoffs.
