Meet the Newest New England Patriot: JaMycal Hasty
Kirby Lee-USA TODAY Sports

On Monday the New England Patriots waived Jack Jones. They filled his spot on the 53-man roster already. The Patriots claimed former Jacksonville Jaguars running back JaMycal Hasty off of waivers.

JaMycal Hasty played his college football for the Baylor Bears. He amassed 2,483 yards from scrimmage and scored 16 touchdowns during his college career. He was part of the same recruiting class at Baylor as former Patriots quarterback Jarrett Stidham, who would eventually transfer to Auburn. Hasty was also a college teammate of current New England wide receiver Tyquan Thornton.

The San Francisco 49ers signed Hasty as an undrafted free agent, after he was not selected in the 2020 NFL Draft. Although he began the season with the practice squad, Hasty would appear in eight games as a rookie. He finished with 148 rushing yards, 38 receiving yards, and scored his first NFL touchdown.

The following season, Hasty remained with San Francisco with an expanded role. He became more of a receiving back. While he rushed only 16 times for 68 yards in 11 games, he also had 23 receptions for 157 yards. The 5-foor-8, 205-pound back showed good hands, with only one drop through his first two seasons. The 49ers reached the NFL Championship Game, where Hasty registered one reception for six yards in a loss to the Rams.

San Francisco waived the running back in the offseason. JaMychal Hasty signed with the Jacksonville Jaguars. He served as the backup to Travis Etienne. Hasty finished the 2022 season with 194 rushing yards and scored two touchdowns, while averaging over 4.0 yards per rush for the second year in a row. He caught 20 passes for 126 yards and a touchdown. Hasty scored on a 61-yard touchdown run against the Indianapolis Colts, his most memorable NFL play to date.

This season, Hasty had appeared in three games for the Jaguars, without registering any offensive stats. Jacksonville waived Hasty on Saturday.

JaMycal Hasty joins a New England Patriots running back room featuring Rhamondre Stevenson and Ezekiel Elliott. The team also has Kevin Harris and Patrick Taylor on the practice squad for positional depth. Hasty fills the “third down back” role which had been a staple for years in New England for years. Kevin Faulk, Danny Woodhead, Shane Vereen, and James White, among others, occupied that spot previously. The “receiving back” has not been a defined role in Foxboro since White was injured three games into the 2021 season. Anything that anyone is able to bring to this offense at this point would be a huge boost.
