New York Giants Land Former Starting Running Back Off Waivers Ahead of Sunday’s Clash with New York Jets – Week 8
Trevor Ruszkowski-USA TODAY Sports

The New York Giants have shuffled their running back room after Sunday’s 14-7 win over the Washington Commanders. With Week 7 in the rearview mirror, the Giants have claimed former Indianapolis Colts starting RB Deon Jackson off waivers.

Jackson was the Colts’ Week 1 starter at running back but lasted just two games before getting waived. The Cleveland Browns took a flyer on Jacskon but released him after just one game. He is now on his third team in 2023.

Deion Jackson to the New York Giants

Deon Jackson went unselected in the 2021 NFL draft, signing with the Indianapolis Colts and taking 13 rushes for 31 yards and a score as a rookie. The Duke product drew his first NFL start in 2022 with star tailback Jonathan Taylor and backup Nyheim Hines on the mend.

He ran for 42 yards on 12 carries while taking ten catches for 79 yards in a 34-27 win over the Jacksonville Jaguars. He also received another start later in the year but was less efficient, rushing 11 times for 23 yards and catching just two passes for 13 yards.

New York Giants: Running Back Room Shakeup with Jackson In, Gray Out

Jackson started the 2023 season as the Indianapolis starting running back with franchise cornerstone Jonathan Taylor on the injured reserve (IR). However, he struggled, rushing 13 times for 14 yards. The 24-year-old did not receive a snap in Week 2 before his release.

Rookie running back Eric Gray will hit the IR in a corresponding move. Gray played behind star back Saquon Barkley and backup Matt Brieda this season. However, Barkley has been injury-prone during his career, and Brieda is averaging just 2.7 yards per rush attempt in seven games. The New York Giants also roster Gary Brightwell, but he has just nine carries for 19 yards. Deon Jackson could work his way on the active roster since the Giants usually deploy four RBs on gameday.
