The Los Angeles Chargers have floated multiple star players in NFL trade rumors this offseason, including edge rushers Khalil Mack and Joey Bosa along with wide receiver Keenan Allen. While only a few of the Chargers trade candidates might ultimately be moved, a market is developing for their stars.

Before the NFL Combine, it was reported that multiple teams were expressing interest in Mack. Once viewed as a potential cap casualty, there’s enough interest in the eight-time Pro Bowl selection to move him. Similarly, Bosa and wide receiver Mike Williams have generated some attention from NFL clubs.

  • Khalil Mack stats (2023): 22 quarterback hits, 21 tackles for loss, 17 sacks, 5 forced fumbles

Mack, age 33, is entering a contract year. Carrying a $38.517 million cap hit for the upcoming season, it’s widely expected that he won’t play another snap for Los Angeles. As for Bosa, one of the highest-paid NFL players in 2024, he carries a $36.6 million cap hit in 2024 with a $32.971 million cap charge in 2025.

  • Joey Bosa stats (2022-23): 14 quarterback hits, 9 tackles for loss, 9 sacks in 14 games played

An anonymous general manager told Jason La Canfora of The Washington Post that he believes the Detroit Lions will trade for either Bosa or Mack to strengthen their pass rush opposite of edge rusher Aidan Hutchinson for the 2024 season.

Informed speculation suggests Mack is the player who is more likely to be moved out of Los Angeles. While he carries a similar cap hit to Bosa, the 2016 NFL Defensive Player of the Year has been more durable and productive over the last two seasons.

Chargers cap savings by trading Joey Bosa or Khalil Mack

In either scenario, Los Angeles would be provided with significant cap savings. At the start of NFL free agency, the Chargers were $21.145 million over the 2024 NFL salary cap. However, the team will certainly have to cover a portion of either contract to facilitate a trade.

Even if the team trades Bosa or Mack, it is unlikely that will prevent future Chargers cap casualties. While Allen is widely expected to remain in Los Angeles, there is an increasing likelihood that Williams will be released. If the Chargers cut Williams, it will generate $20 million in cap savings.
