NFL insider 'bothered' by Tua Tagovailoa's comments about calling plays

Miami Dolphins quarterback Tua Tagovailoa made headlines this week after saying he "wasn't comfortable" calling plays for the team during his rookie season in 2020. 

His comments drew some criticism, and former NFL quarterback Tim Hasselbeck said Thursday on "NFL Live" that he was "bothered" by Tagovailoa's remarks because it's not something you want to hear out of a first-round pick. 

"I have to be honest, I kind of read some of the comments, (but) that's the first time I had heard him say it in that way. It kind of bothered me," Hasselbeck said, according to 247Sports. "That should never, ever, ever happen with a quarterback, a guy that's drafted in the first round that's going to be the guy. I get it, the offseason was weird, it was hard, but I don't want to hear Joe Burrow or anybody else talking about, 'Hey, I didn't learn the playbook.' That, to me, is bad. Look, I do think he'll be better, but sometimes, maybe, you don't have to give everybody all of your information."

Ryan Fitzpatrick started the first six games of the 2020 campaign before Tagovailoa came in as the starter after Miami's bye week. The 23-year-old started well, lifting the Dolphins to three straight wins before being benched after a poor performance against the Denver Broncos. 

The Alabama product went 6-3, completing 64.1% of his passes for 1,814 yards and 11 touchdowns against five interceptions. He also ran for 109 yards and three scores. 

While Tagovailoa could have been better, it was a good start for him, especially considering he'll now have full control over the offense in 2021 after Ryan Fitzpatrick signed with the Washington Football Team. 

Tagovailoa recently admitted that he feels "really confident" entering his second NFL season and head coach Brian Flores says he believes the young quarterback is "definitely more comfortable" entering year two.
